Elliott Carter, Commander in the French Legion of Honor

On September 21, 2012, Elliott Carter was awarded France’s highest honor: the rank of Commander in the Legion of Honor. The award was presented by François Delattre, the French ambassador to the United States at a ceremony at the French Embassy in New York City. M. Delattre called Carter “A dear friend who is one of the most important composers of our time.”
